Several colleges and universities across the United States are starting to implement green or eco-friendly innovations. Some of these innovations include energy alternatives and means of creating less waste. Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia currently has a few initiatives in place in order to be a "greener" campus. Still, there is plenty of room for more initiatives and improvement. As representatives for The Green College Project, we plan to bring new life to the current green methods as well as form new innovative ways for Longwood University to be more environmentally conscientious and friendly.
Longwood University's current environmental initiatives include:
- An Environment Management System that is a system that is in place to identify, control, and reduce the daily environmental impact that the college makes.
- A Storm water management system and water conservation practices are in place. Which include harvesting rainwater to water the fields, and collecting storm-water runoff to prevent it from polluting other water sources.
- The dining hall has recycled napkins. There is also a food-pulper that turns food waste into compost that is used at various locations around campus. Food that is not eaten is donated to local food banks.
- A biomass plant is on campus that is responsible for the heating of buildings as well as water. The biomass plant burns sawdust, which otherwise would go unused.
- There are two LEED buildings, which are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design buildings on campus. The gym as well as one of the academic buildings both meet the six area requirements to be LEED certified.
- A recycling centers functions on campus and the recycling bins are taken to the center to be processed.
